Meeting Recap

Greetings fellow Rotarians!  Today’s speaker was Ed McCollin, the Executive Director of the Green Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  Mr. McCollin told us about the Friends of Scouting Fundraising Campaign. This is an annual effort by the Boy Scouts to help offset the costs of operating their programs.  Mr. McCollin went on to explain the virtues of scouting and the values that it can build for its participants.   The remainder of the discussion focused on the recent controversy surrounding the stance Boy Scouts of America has taken on homosexual members and leaders and the impact it has had at both the local and national level.  For more information on the Green Mountain Council, please visit its website at www.scoutingvermont.org

Dave Hakins

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of former Essex Rotarian, Dave Hakins.  Dave unfortunately succumbed to a five-month battle with pancreatic cancer earlier this week.  He is fondly remembered for the time spent with our Club and the energy he brought to it.  Visiting hours will be at Ready Funeral Home on Shelburne Road, South Burlington from 3:00pm to 6:00pm on Thursday, July 25th and from 1:00pm to 4:00pm on Friday, July 26th.  Arrangements for a memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Essex Rotary Corn Booth

Due to the abnormally rainy summer, our usual supplier of corn is uncertain as to whether there will be enough corn to donate to our Club this year. Currently, the Corn Booth Committee is trying to come up with a “Plan B” in the event we are unable to obtain our annual donation of corn.  We should, however, still operate under the assumption that the Corn Booth will be running in some capacity this year. As such, we need all of our members to pitch in and volunteer to work shifts during the Champlain Valley Fair from August 24th through September 2nd.  The more helping hands the better, so please encourage your family members and friends to pitch in as well. A sign up sheet for shifts will be circulated shortly, however, if you already know which shift you would like to work, you are encouraged to contact Committee Chair, Holly Lemieux with your shift choice. For more information about this event, please contact Holly at holly@lemieux-law.com

Rotary Dues

You all should have received an invoice for the 2013-2014 Rotary dues. Please remit payment of your dues as soon as possible as a portion of what you pay covers our Club’s District and International dues. If you do not intend to renew your membership, we would ask that you please let our board members know immediately so that they may update our Club’s membership information.

Upcoming Meeting Schedule:  Wednesday, July 31st – Committee Meetings.
