Meeting Recap

Greetings fellow Rotarians! Our speaker today was Professor Peter Mires who joined us via Zoom all the way from Reno, Nevada. Although Dr. Mires now makes him home in Nevada, he is originally from Vermont. His perspective of growing up here was unique, however, as he was afflicted with the polio virus at a very young age.  He described how difficult it was as a growing boy to face such a debilitating illness and how he endured treatment and therapy until he was 8 years old.  With perseverance, he overcome this obstacle and went on to have a productive and fulfilling life.  In addition to becoming a renowned authority on southwestern architecture, geography and anthropology, he now spends time hiking and enjoying all that the Nevada outdoors have to offer.  While Dr. Mires is an example of someone who was able to overcome this adversity, many have not been as fortunate.  That is why the work we do to support the Rotary Foundation is so important as these efforts bring us closer every year to eradicating this virus forever.

Rotary Fiscal Budget

In light of the possibility that we might not have any fundraisers this year,  the Board has decided to take the charitable funds that were not spent in the 2019-2020 Rotary year (roughly $23,000.00), combine them with the funds that had already been allocated for use in this fiscal year ($5,500.00 from the 2019 Corn Booth; a $5,000.00 grant from Vermont Mutual insurance; and $6,500.00 from this year’s hockey classic) and split them evenly between the 2020-2021 fiscal Rotary year and the 2021-2022 fiscal Rotary year.  This way we know we will be able to earmark roughly $20,000.00 each year for charitable causes even if we are unable to hold any fundraisers this year.  The Board will re-assess the allocations in the event we are able to hold fundraisers this year.
