Meeting Recap

Greetings fellow Rotarians! In the spirit of District Governor Richard Fox’s call for more collaboration between service organizations in the area, we welcomed Dr. Carmelle Terbough, President of the Essex Lions Club to address our Club. Dr. Terbough explained that, like Rotary, the Lions Club is an international service organization that focuses on a number of causes.  The most prominent causes supported by the Lions are diabetes care; vision; the environment; world hunger; and child cancer. Locally, the Essex Lions Club supports a number of charitable endeavors that overlap with our own interests, such as the Heavenly Pantry Food Shelf and Essex CHIPs. In addition to these worthy causes, the local Lions have been instrumental in financing improvements to our community’s infrastructure. Projects financed by the Lions include the construction of the Maple Street pool and pickle ball courts at Cascade Park. In addition to serving as the President of the Essex Lions, Dr. Terbough is a geographer by trade and develops GSI technology that is used worldwide.  She illustrated the manners in which this technology can be used for good by providing a map that pinpointed the various outbreaks of polio worldwide. She also demonstrated how the software can be used in sustainable development projects. Essex Eats Out

Our Club is once again supporting Essex Eats Out.  Each year, our Club assumes the responsibility of putting on a dinner for the community.  On Friday, October 4th, our Club will put on a dinner at the First Congregational Church in Essex Junction.  We not only need people to volunteer to work at this event, but we need Members to bring food items as well.  If you are able to help, please sign up on the sign-up sheet that is being distributed at meetings.  Or you can contact Penny Klein at penny@sugarmaplecollegeconsulting.com if you have any questions about this event.

Upcoming Breakfast Meetings

Just as a reminder, we will be holding two breakfast meetings at The Essex this fall.  These two meetings will be held at 7:30am on Wednesday, September 25th and Wednesday, October 30th.  Each of these meetings will be held in lieu of our luncheon meetings on those weeks. Our hope is that hosting meetings at different times will present opportunities to more of our members who aren’t able to attend our lunch meetings on a regular basis.  Our speaker on September 25th will be District Governor, Richard Fox.

Heavenly Pantry Food Shelf

We are looking for volunteers to help staff the Heavenly Pantry Food Shelf on the following dates; Monday, October 14th (5:15pm); and Thursday, October 24th (3:30pm).  Please contact Sharon Dettenrieder at sharon.dettenrieder@gmail.com if you are able to fill any of these shifts.

Upcoming Meeting Schedule:  Wednesday, September 18, 2019 – Our speaker will be fellow Rotarian, Patrick Hutton.  Patrick will be sharing his insights on teaching the history of the present age.
