Meeting Recap

Greetings fellow Rotarians! Today we celebrated our Rotary Exchange program by welcoming some of the young adults we have sponsored as exchange students. We first heard from Charlotte Ide, who is a 2018 graduate from Mount Mansfield Union High School.  Charlotte recently did a short-term exchange in Belgium. As someone who has a passion for the arts, Charlotte was thrilled to have the opportunity to see the amazing architecture that can be found throughout Belgium.  Presenting with Charlotte was Maureen, whose family hosted Charlotte in Belgium.  Maureen is now staying with Charlotte’s family in Jericho.  In addition to seeing Vermont, Charlotte will be taking Maureen to New York City and to Montreal.  Our next presenter was Ayla York.  Ayla is a recent high school graduate who spent her senior year in Argentina through the Rotary Exchange program.  Ayla stayed with three different families over the course of the year who all showed her the many amazing sights of Argentina. As a vegetarian, Ayla commented that she had to get used to the fact that grilled meats are staples of Argentinian cuisine. Ayla emphasized how this year was a life-changing experience and how she built real friendships with her classmates and their families in Argentina. We would like to thank all three of these students for taking the time to share their experiences with the Rotary Exchange program.

Essex Rotary Corn Booth

Thank you to all of the Rotarians who have signed up for shifts at the Corn Booth.  We still, however, have a number of evening slots that remain empty.  Presently, close to one-third of our members have yet to sign up for a shift.  In fairness to those who have already signed up for two or more slots, we ask those of you who have not signed up to please help us fill the remaining shifts. Ray Allaire will have passes for parking and entrance into the Fair for our volunteers. Once they are available, you may pick them up from Ray at future meetings or at Sunray Fire and Security located on 1 Market Place, Suite #29 in Essex.  Finally, for those who are interested, Corn Dollars are available for purchase. For $20.00 you can get ten Corn Dollars. One Corn Dollar is good for one ear of corn at the Corn Booth. Corn Dollars can be given to friends, family members or anyone else who might enjoy an ear of corn at the Fair. For more information about the Corn Booth, please contact either Mike Dimitroff or Ray Allaire.

Rotary Theme for the Month of August

The Rotary theme for the month of August is Membership and Extensions.  As most of you know, a Club’s strength comes from its members. The good work that Rotary does cannot be accomplished without strong membership.  The best way to draw quality members to our Club is to extend our message into the community and let people know about the good things we do.  With that in mind, we ask Rotarians to take the time tell people what Rotary is all about and to do your part in encouraging people who are interested in serving the community to consider membership in our Club.

Upcoming Meeting Schedule:  Wednesday, August 15, 2018 – Our speaker will be David Voegele, fellow Essex Rotarian and Executive Director of CHIPs.
