Meeting Recap

Greetings fellow Rotarians! Today we had a firsthand look at the good work our fundraising efforts support as we held our annual scholarship luncheon. Six exceptional students from Essex High School, Mount Mansfield Union High School (MMU) and the Center for Technology each received scholarships from our Club in the amount of $1,500.00.  In addition to the Rotary scholarships, one student was awarded the $3,000.00 Carolyn Barra Scholarship.  The first scholarship recipient was Willoughby Carlo from MMU.  Willoughby will be attending Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts in the fall. Also from MMU, our next scholarship recipient was Charlotte Ide. Charlotte will be studying filmmaking at Champlain College next year.  From Essex, we recognized Wren House who will be re-locating to Oakland, Ohio next year.  The other scholarship recipient from Essex High School was Dominique Sweat.  Dominque has been accepted to Old Dominion University in Virginia.  The first scholarship recipient from the Center for Technology was Donovan Garcia-Buckler.  Donovan will be attending Champlain College in the fall.  The final recipient of our Club’s scholarship was Hayley Fox from the Center for Technology. During her time at the Center for Technology, Hayley earned 18 college credits. We closed out our meeting with the presentation of the annual Carolyn Barra Scholarship.  As many of you know, this scholarship is named in memory of Carolyn Barra and is financed with funds from outside of our Club. It is awarded to a student who has achieved academic excellence and is active in both community service and the performing arts.  This year’s recipient of the award was Megan Ardren from Essex High School. Megan will be studying statistics at the University of Vermont in the fall.  Thank you to Judge David Barra for his work in putting this year’s luncheon together and for serving as the master of ceremonies today.  Congratulations to all of the scholarship recipients for honors well-deserved!

Essex Rotary Golf Tournament

The annual Essex Rotary Golf Tournament is only a few weeks away! We are still hoping to surpass last year’s net profit of over $26,000.00, but we have a lot of work to do in order to get there. If you haven’t done so already, please contact your assigned sponsors and encourage them to get their pledges and checks in soon!

Heavenly Pantry Food Shelf

Thank you to all who are signed up to work at the food shelf on Monday, May 14th and May 24th.  The next opportunities to volunteer will be on Monday, June 11th from 5:30 to 7:30; and Thursday, June 21st from 3:30 to 6:30. Please let Sharon Dettenrieder know if you are able to fill any of these shifts.

Upcoming Meeting Schedule:  Wednesday, May 30, 2018 – President Trish Porter will be hosting a pot luck dinner at her home in lieu of our regularly scheduled meeting that day.  Rotarians are encouraged to bring their family members to what should be a very fun event.  The Club will also be holding a basket raffle to raise funds for our general account. A sign-up sheet is being circulated, so please let Trish know how many people from your party will attend and what you plan to bring to the dinner.
