Meeting Recap

Greetings fellow Rotarians!  Today’s speaker was Melissa Lang from the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program (VRRP).  This organization is a non-profit group that focuses its efforts on assisting refugees who have recently settled in Vermont.   The main goal of VRRP is to help these individuals acclimate to the area and to eventually achieve economic self-sufficiency.  The promotion of education and literacy is a major component of their program.  Our Club’s literacy committee recently contributed to this effort by funding the purchase of some much-needed picture dictionaries that will be used to help teach English to these individuals.  VRRP assists people who come from a number of different countries, however, the largest group of people they have supported are those from Bhutan, followed by former residents of Burma, Iraq and Somalia.  In addition to financial support, VRRP is also in need of tutors who are willing to visit the homes of these people to assist in teaching them English.  For more information about this organization, please visit their website at:  www.vrrp.org

Essex Rotary All-Star Hockey Classic

Preparations are well under way for this event and we will soon be soliciting volunteers to help out on game day.  Both games and banquets are being held on Saturday, March 23, 2013.  The banquets will be held at The Essex starting at 9:30am, with the woman’s banquet being held in the ballroom and the men’s banquet being held in the atrium.  The women’s game will be held at the Essex Skating Facility at 1:00pm, and the men’s game will start at the same venue at 4:00pm.  Like the Golf Tournament, the Corn Booth, and the Senior Luncheon,  this is an event where we really do need as many volunteers as possible.  As such, we would ask that all Rotarians be prepared to help out at this event.  For more information, please contact myself at JFR@essexvtlaw.com
