Meeting Recap
Greetings fellow Rotarians! Today we honored our local recipients of Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (otherwise known as RYLA). For those unfamiliar with RYLA, it is a leadership program coordinated by Rotary International that aims to encourage and develop leadership and community awareness amongst young adults. Each Club sends local high school students to a District RYLA conference that takes place over the course of a few days. There, the participants take part in exercises and activities that help develop their leadership skills. This year’s recipients were Essex High School sophomores, Matthew Davis and Erica Elmer. Both were nominated to participate in this program by their guidance counselors. They were each selected on the basis of the leadership potential that they have each demonstrated at school. Both students took the time to share their experiences from this year’s RYLA District event and the impact it had on them. Congratulations to these two students for this achievement!
Essex Rotary Service Project
We once again have the opportunity to take part in this year’s “Feed My Starving Children” project. This event will take place on Friday, October 18th from 3:30pm to 5:30pm at the Albert D. Lawton School in Essex Junction. Our Club has committed to providing 30 members but so far, we only have 19 people signed up. Please keep in mind that family members and friends are more than welcome to join us, however, President Marie will need to know the names of the volunteers so that she may submit them to the sponsoring organization. A sign-up sheet is being circulated at meetings, so please consider joining fellow Rotarians for a highly rewarding service project.
Lac Megantic Donations
Even though the benefit concert is over, you may still make donations to assist the victims of the tragedy that took place in Lac Megantic, Quebec. Donations can be made at the District level. Please contact either President Marie or Dave Johnson on the details.
Upcoming Meeting Schedule: Wednesday, October 9th – Our speaker will be Julie Edwards who is the curator at Shelburne Farms.
